Shepherdess
Shepherdess

I've seen many before but never one who controls a huge heard solo in one of the toughest high altitude mountains in Lebanon. Her voice, whistles and calls echoed loudly around surrounding hills and valleys. A very strong and tough girl with a beautiful face reflecting power, courage and determination. I was lucky to be in the area but also to have earned her trust to let me make a brief photographic coverage of her daily routines.

Stocking for winter.
Stocking for winter.

This scene could easily belong to the past, but fortunately in some of Lebanon's remote villages, villagers still produce, harvest and prepare their stocks for wintertimes. Here, a grandma and her granddaughter working on a yogurt-based product called Kichk. It's a very long and meticulous process that takes weeks to finish. Final product is a white powder that makes delicious soup recipes.

Burdened by life. Strengthened by faith
Burdened by life. Strengthened by faith

I was literally trapped by this sight on one of Beirut's narrow streets. I couldn't resist the presence of the rosary and the absence of the head!

Slow walker, slow talker but an avid smoker. Abou Hasan is a retired shepherd from Akkar region. Always a bless to be around wise people like him.

Getting old leaves its clear signs and marks on the human body but it's at eyes level where age manifests itself the most. For this lady however, getting old is marking her all over except her eyes. She's 110 years old and those eyes are still capable to radiate youth and life!
I was blessed to spend some time photographing her while enjoying her humor and vivid curiosity. A perfect example of an old body with a young spirit.

I was behind of a group of tourists taking pictures and selfies at the edge of Byblos pier when out of no where, a huge wave smashed on the rocks bellow and smashed over the Pier edge and it's visitants. They tried to run but the sea was faster :-)

Lebanon is a wedding venue, I mean it. wherever you go, there's a wedding related activity happening. This is due of course to the variety of beautiful places perfectly suited for photo shoots.

those are the wedding I've not been invited to but enjoyed the show anyways.

This beautiful scene was part of Byblos old fishing harbor for years but not anymore, it was removed due to some sidewalk works done by the municipality.

"Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only 'cause you're lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?"
I remembered Nat King Cole's song Mona Lisa when I met this beauty today. Was my subject smiling or not? Is my subject a girl or a boy?!

Hasroun is one of the most beautiful and well maintained villages in Lebanon. It's a high altitude location near Bicharri and Cedars region at around 1500m ASL.

Standup family

Probably one of the few remaining full time shepherd families in Lebanon. Here, out of their Hut to receive passing by hikers. This is probably my last visit this season to this breathtaking place, They should be leaving by mid November, seeking lowland in order to escape freezing temperatures.

Entered a nearby church when I heard music being played inside, I found the national philharmonic orchestra rehearsing for a Christmas Concert. It was music to the ears but not to the eyes photographically speaking. I couldn't find a shot until I looked back and noticed a beautiful sight of a cello anchored in the middle of the church's pathway by the orchestra's violoncello soloist Razvan Suma.

One of the highest natural plateaus in Lebanon also a top destination for hikers and locals during summertimes. I love to go there during winter because as you can see, it's completely deserted and silent.

Yasmina
Yasmina

Yasmina is a little shepherd angel that I can't help but visit and photograph when I hike by her father's hut. Although it's already Spring here in Lebanon, Yasmina lives in a beautiful remote highland region where temperatures are still around zero degrees. here she's seeking warmth from a homemade stove.

Sometimes, many times actually, being patient pays off. That day I was not sure the sea will reward my patience but it did.

I waited for more than 30 minutes, finger on the trigger, camera steadily pointing in one direction until mother nature conspired with me sending a huge unpredicted wave up toward a group of tourists that were enjoying the view. Byblos Pier, Lebanon.

Wild West of Lebanon
Wild West of Lebanon

Probably the most amazing and unique mountainous region of Lebanon. Located just bellow 2000 meters of altitude, Araanita highlands resembles more to the american wild west than to a typical  mediterranean landscape.

Bread-Dance
Bread-Dance

An old traditional Lebanese bread called Markouk. The dough is flattened by a complex yet extravagant hands & arms moves. Few people still make it, they are usually high altitude villagers.

Net-Worthy

Fishing is a job of patience. Fishermen spend as much time at the sea as they do at harbor fixing and restoring their nets before they can go out fishing again.
